I first met Nigel as students in Germany in 1979 when he was 20 years old, living 4 miles apart. We met every week for a pint or six and enjoyed many happy days speaking to and making fun of the Germans!
Later I lived with him for 3 years in London. I also played many sports with him including football, cricket, golf, squash, tennis and snooker. There are so many memories and amazing moments that it is hard to choose one above the others.
However one stands out from our time in Germany. Nigel and I caught the train to Dortmund one day to attend the match between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Unfortunately the match was a complete sell out and there was no way we could get in. Then Nigel noticed a bundle at one of the gates where a number of Germans were pushing into the ground. He immediately marched towards it leaving me trailing in his wake. As two big Germans came to close the gate he pulled a picture of Scarborough beach out of his pocket and calmly walked in announcing himself as "British Press". I did not have a picture of Scarborough Beach in my pocket so had to follow without the authority, also stating "British Press". Amazingly we both got in to the ground. It was so Nigel.
Whilst in Germany he acquired the nickname of "Schnitzel Biggun" which stuck for the rest of his life with those who were in Germany with him. This was because the Germans had problems with the English 'J' and this was how Nigel Jibson sounded to them. A funny man taken for too early
